The Embassy of India in Buenos Aires celebrated the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October 2019, with the Vice President of the Republic of Argentina, H.E. Ms. Gabriela Michetti, being the guest of honor at the event.

In the mark of the event that is being celebrated by Indian embassies across the world, Ambassador of India to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay Shri Dinesh Bhatia, along with Vice President Michetti launched a joint publication between the Embassy of India and Consejo Argentino de Relaciones Internacionales (CARI) “Gandhi: Perspectivas Latinoamericanas.”

Representatives from CARI were also present during the launch of the book, which speaks about the links and influences Mahatma Gandhi’s life, principles, writings and philosophies have had in the society, culture and polity of Latin America.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Ms. Michetti addressed the gathering, speaking about the relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy, teachings and politics in today’s times. The Vice President had earlier paid her tributes to the Mahatma Gandhi bust at the Embassy.

Ambassador Dinesh Bhatia spoke about the measures taken by the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote the Gandhian principle of equality through schemes for free health and financial and digital inclusion.

The event began with a rendition by Argentine artist Carolina Chrem and group of “Vaishnav Jan To,” a favourite hymn of Mahatma Gandhi. During the course of the last year, artists from more than 124 countries recorded renditions of the hymn, accompanied by musical instruments, to pay musical homage to Mahatma Gandhi through his favourite bhajan. The visitors were also treated to a Bharatanatyam (classical Indian dance) performance by Argentine artists Natalia Salgado and Gerardo Meola.
