Speech by H.E. Mr. Ajaneesh Kumar, Ambassador of India to Argentina, on the occasion of the Inauguration of the Indian Film Festival at Atlas Cine on 15 April 2026

Distinguished Guests, Dear Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Namaste, buenas tardes.

It is a great pleasure and honour to welcome you all this evening to the inauguration of the Film Festival of India, being held from 15 to 18 April 2026 here at Atlas Cines.

  1. Cinema has long been one of the most powerful mediums of social influence. It shapes public opinion, reflects cultural values, and inspires change. Across the world, films do much more than entertain, they educate audiences, raise awareness about important social issues, and foster empathy by presenting diverse human experiences. Cinema has the unique ability to challenge stereotypes, promote inclusion, and even influence public discourse on issues such as gender equality, education, and national identity. At the same time, it serves as a cultural bridge, connecting people across borders through shared emotions and compelling storytelling.

  2. From early classics to contemporary productions, Indian cinema has consistently reflected the country’s social realities while also influencing aspirations and values. Beyond its domestic impact, Indian cinema has served as a powerful cultural ambassador, strengthening people to people connections across the globe by showcasing India’s traditions, music, dance, and ethos.

  3. India’s film industry is widely recognized as the largest in the world by volume, producing an extraordinary number of films each year across multiple languages and regions. Approximately between 1,700 and 1,800 films are produced annually in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and several other languages, with an estimated total market value of between USD 8 billion and USD 15 billion.

  4. The global reach of Indian cinema is equally impressive. Indian films are now distributed in over 100 countries worldwide, attracting audiences far beyond the Indian diaspora. With the advent of streaming platforms, Indian cinema has reached even the most remote corners of the world.

  5. While Argentina may not yet be a major production hub for Indian cinema, its role is steadily growing as part of the broader globalisation of the film industry. The shared love for music, dance, and emotional storytelling hallmarks of both Indian cinema and Argentina’s rich artistic traditions such as tango, creates natural opportunities for collaboration. Argentina offers inspiring locations, enthusiastic audiences, and a vibrant cultural environment that can further strengthen creative exchanges between our two countries.

  6. This evening, I would like to draw your attention to the four films being showcased in this festival, each of which vividly captures the richness, diversity, and ethos of India.

  7. The opening film which we will enjoy soon, Mission Mangal, celebrates India’s extraordinary journey in space exploration. It portrays the inspiring true story of the Mars mission, highlighting themes of determination, innovation, and teamwork.

English Vinglish offers a deeply touching and relatable narrative of a woman rediscovering her self-worth and confidence, a story that resonates universally across cultures.

Chak De India showcases how sport can unite a diverse nation, while powerfully promoting women’s empowerment and national pride through the journey of a determined hockey team.

And finally, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a timeless classic, weaves a heartfelt romance that beautifully balances modern aspirations with enduring family values.

  1. As we inaugurate this festival today, we celebrate not only cinema, but also the enduring friendship between India and Argentina. Through initiatives like this, we hope to deepen mutual understanding and bring our peoples closer together. I would also like to thank the management at Atlas Cine for their cooperation in making this event a success.

  2. I warmly invite all of you to enjoy the films over the coming days and immerse yourselves in the colors, stories, and spirit of India.

Muchas gracias. Dhanyavad.
